Welcome to the New Year and the New Blog

I started blogging many years ago. Most of my blogs would start off well, but then fizzle over a couple of months. I kept starting new blogs, though, because I knew that I had a voice and a vision to share. Last year, this all changed and I find myself trying to outdo myself in the new year.

Last year, Mike Martinez contacted me about contributing to Queer Oakland. He wanted me to take the reins and run the blog like a pack of wild dogs. While I never got the full pack going, I did manage to get some puppies out there. Over the year I had good weeks and bad weeks with Queer Oakland, but in the end I found myself being a better communicator. For this, I would like to thank Mike even as the doors were closed on Queer Oakland.

I also spent much of last year working on Back to Me and Queer Landia. In hindsight, I wish I would have focused more attention on these two as ultimately, they are the tools for my vision in the coming year. Queer Landia gives me a place to share my moderate views on politics, queerdom and many other topics. I look forward to seeing where this blog will go this year. Back to Me gave me a place to share my random thoughts and appreciation for sexy men and humor. This year this will expand as my blog grows. Continue reading

The Good, The Bad and The New

The old year is gone and the new year is under way. This new year brings some bad news, some good news and something new. I will start off with the bad news, since many of my faithful readers already know this. As of mid-December, Queer Oakland has been shut down. For a variety of reasons, this was the best decision for all of us involved. I will miss Queer Oakland, but I was never able to get the spark built into a fire.

The good news is that I will have more time for this blog as well as Queer Landia. Trying to manage my blog, Queer Oakland and continue to contribute to Queer Landia was draining me. Each of the blogs had a different focus which was pulling me into to too many different directions. Focusing on two blogs will help me to bring better posts (and more posts, oddly enough) to you. I hope you stick around to see the new.

And the new. Wait. Did I actually tell y’all about the new? Crap. I didn’t mean to. That was supposed to be a surprise. Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag, but I won’t give you much. I will tell you that words have more meaning than just their definitions. I will also tell you that I am really excited (and considering buying a tablet to help with this “new”).

Instant Mashed Potatoes… In Twenty Minutes

Today’s post is inspired by The Bloggess and my own overly logical brain.

The other day, I decided to be helpful and make dinner. As you can presume from the headline, one of the items that I made was instant mashed potatoes, which turned out to be not so instant. I read the instructions/recipe which told me the following:

1. Measure 2 cups boiling water into serving bowl

2. Add pouch of Idahoan Potatoes all at once, using a fork to moisten all potatoes. Let stand 1 minute.

3. Stir well and serve.

That sounds simple enough, right? So I put around 3 or 4 cups of water into a pot to heat up. While that was heating, I pulled out a bowl and the measuring cup to get them ready. At this point, I realized that the measuring cup was glass and warning bells went off in my head. Those bells typically tell me that I need to ask Jason for advice or suffer the consequences. So I did.

Me: Can I measure this boiling water using the glass measuring cup?

Jason: No. The measuring cup will break. (see, the warning bells are usually right. That would have been messy)

Me: So how do I measure the boiling water for the potatoes?

Jason: *blank stare* (these stares typically mean that my overly logical brain is trumping common sense)

Me: Do we have another measuring cup that I am forgetting about (as I open the cabinets)

Jason: Why wouldn’t you just measure out two cups of water into the pot and boil it?

Me: Because then I would have less than 2 cups since the boiling means water is evaporating.

Jason: *blank stare* Continue reading

They Asked, I Told: A personal DADT story by Zander | Queer Landia

In 1993, I was young and reckless. I lacked discipline and direction. I lacked money for college. I needed a purpose and I thought I found one. I signed on for a 6 year tour with the United States Navy. I even tested high enough to join the Nuclear Engineering program. I was set with a direction and a purpose. I was going to help my country while finding myself and my way. In December of 1993 I was going to ship out for boot camp.

In November of 1993, I went to see my recruiter. There appeared to be something missing in my paperwork. I downplayed my allergy to bees to stay in the Navy. I even scrunched down when they measured my height to ensure that I could go. When they asked about my chronic bronchitis, I told them I was getting colds frequently. What else could be missing from my paperwork? Continue reading

New Theme for Back to Me

I am trying out a new theme for my blog. What do you think? Do you like this theme? Do you prefer the old theme? Do you want me to keep looking for a different theme?

Leave a comment and let me know what your thoughts are on this.

Back To Me Goes Queerer!

My stint over on Queer Oakland has been brief, but fruitful. The team running the Queer Network has added me to their new flagship site Queer Landia. I have a few posts over there already, so check them out.

To summarize the latest updates, you can now find my posts on three sites. I will keep running Back To Me with (hopefully) weekly posts. If you live in the Oakland, CA area, you can check out items directly concerning the city over on Queer Oakland. For more worldly news, you can now find me on Queer Landia.

That is three whole blogs with even more space space for my opinions to explode. Three blogs to absorb information from the mind of me. If that sounds daunting, let me break down what will be posted where. Queer Oakland will continue to focus on Oakland community items and LGBT Oakland items. Back to Me will continue to focus on random thoughts, including tech, politics, GLBT news and, of course, hot men. Queer Landia will be the larger platform for national (and world) news about GLBT news and politics.

Does that sound easy? I hope so. I also hope to see you around the blogs and in the comments sections. While I do have my posts hitting Facebook, I don’t spend much time on that site any more. If you want me to see your thoughts, views and comments, click the link on FB and go directly to the blog to leave a comment.

2011 is going to be an exciting year. I hope you will come along for the ride.
