Is Starbucks Killing Unicorns? | Queer Landia

Headlines can be really deceiving. Taking a situation that might be happening, changing it into a question and then using that as a headline typically suggests that this is true. Writers do this to grab attention and get more clicks. (just like I did).

However, this can bite us in the ass as a community as well. For example, a recent headline on 365gay.com reads Is Starbucks Anti-Gay? Based on this headline, I expected some big corporate scandal. Maybe an email that was leaked or internal memos that got posted. Maybe Starbucks fired people for going to gay pride parades while drinking their Iced Lattes.

New York Edges Closer to Marriage Equality | Queer Landia

Earlier today, 365Gay ran an article about three Democratic Senators switching their votes on marriage equality. Previously, Senators Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., Shirley L. Huntley, and Carl Kruger all voted against marriage equality, but now they say they will vote for passing the legislation.

I was really excited to hear this news, but the Senate was still three votes short for passing the legislation. That was until this afternoon.

Don’t Say Gay Turns Into Don’t Say Math, Reading, Comprehension

By now I am sure that you have heard about the so called “Don’t Say Gay” bill that is roaming around the Tennessee Legislatures. The bill was intended to prevent teachers from discussing homosexuality in public schools. As bad as that legislation was, the bill became worse (and much funnier) after Amendment 5 was added. Amendment 5 states “Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, any instruction or materials made available or provided at or to a public elementary or middle school shall be limited exclusively to natural human reproduction science.”

Now read that section again, but pay attention to the actual words and not just the meaning. This amendment changes the meaning of the bill to state that “any instruction or materials made available…to a public elementary or middle school shall be limited exclusively to natural human reproduction science. Period.

If you take this literally, that means schools will not be able to teach math, biology, reading or any other subject other than natural human reproduction science. I hope this passes. I would love to see how many schools get sued for teaching math and other subjects.

Heteroflexible?

Below is a question from Ask the Expert on 365gay.com. The question is a really good question. The answer, for the most part, is really good as well. I disagree with his assertion when it comes to fantasizing about someone of the same gender, but then again, I tend to believe pretty firmly in Kinsey’s 7 degrees of sexuality. In other versions of this scale, levels 1-5 are listed as degrees of bisexuality, but all of the scales that I found are this new one.

What do you believe? Click the link to read the question and then follow the source to read the answer. I would love to hear your views on this. Continue reading

How the Grinch Stole Gay Marriage

How the Grinch Stole Marriage by Mary Ann Horton, Lisa and Bill Koontz (with apologies to Dr. Seuss.)

Every Gay down in Gayville liked Gay Marriage a lot……

But the Grinch, who lived just east of Gayville, did NOT!!

The Grinch hated happy Gays! The whole Marriage season!

Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.

It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right.

It could be, perhaps, his Florsheims were too tight.

But I think the most likely reason of all was

His heart and brain were two sizes too small. Continue reading

NOM Followers Convert One of Their Own | Queer Landia

Louis Marinelli organized the National Organization for Marriage’s bus tour. He drove the RV and blogged about the bus tour. He has made comments such as “homosexuals have shorter life spans due to their lifestyle” and “homosexuals are deceitful people who care only about themselves”.

So how does one of the higher-ups in an anti-gay group become an advocate for marriage equality? He listened to his followers and became repulsed by what they were saying. He also listened to the LGBT protesters and a light bulb went off for him. Read some quotes from him below, but also make sure you check out the original interview.

Maryland Reaches a Stalemate | Queer Landia

Maryland Reaches a Stalemate

Posted on March 12, 2011 by Zander

All of the great efforts to get marriage equality in Maryland have come to a stalemate for the year. The Maryland House has shelved the bill due to a lack of support. This is sad news for Marylanders, but it is not the end. As we reach these stalemates (and even losses), we have to remember that we have wins across the country as well.

New Emeryville Target | Queer Oakland

This may or may not be good news, depending on your reaction to the Target debacle last year. Target has opened a new location that is just a few miles outside of Oakland. The new location, which carries groceries, is located in Emeryville on 40th Street. This store is less than 4 miles away from my new Oakland apartment.

The store officially opened up today and I will be heading over there this afternoon to check it out. Are you going to save some money at Target or are you still boycotting them? Let me know in the comments.

Back To Me Goes Queerer!

My stint over on Queer Oakland has been brief, but fruitful. The team running the Queer Network has added me to their new flagship site Queer Landia. I have a few posts over there already, so check them out.

To summarize the latest updates, you can now find my posts on three sites. I will keep running Back To Me with (hopefully) weekly posts. If you live in the Oakland, CA area, you can check out items directly concerning the city over on Queer Oakland. For more worldly news, you can now find me on Queer Landia.

That is three whole blogs with even more space space for my opinions to explode. Three blogs to absorb information from the mind of me. If that sounds daunting, let me break down what will be posted where. Queer Oakland will continue to focus on Oakland community items and LGBT Oakland items. Back to Me will continue to focus on random thoughts, including tech, politics, GLBT news and, of course, hot men. Queer Landia will be the larger platform for national (and world) news about GLBT news and politics.

Does that sound easy? I hope so. I also hope to see you around the blogs and in the comments sections. While I do have my posts hitting Facebook, I don’t spend much time on that site any more. If you want me to see your thoughts, views and comments, click the link on FB and go directly to the blog to leave a comment.

2011 is going to be an exciting year. I hope you will come along for the ride.
