Why Microsoft Is Being Left in the Dust – Yahoo! News

If you are interested in technology news, this is an excellent article that you have to read.

There are now a number of companies — Apple, Google, Amazon, and others — that have Microsoft in their rear-view mirrors, disappearing quickly on the horizon in a cloud of dust.[More from Mashable: Mother’s Day: 10 Digital Gifts for Last-Minute Shoppers]That kick of dust in the company’s face is being emitted by Apple’s iPhone and iPad, Amazon’s Kindle, and Google’s search and cloud domination. Microsoft’s own wild lunges into various technology segments are also contributing considerably to it being left behind. Take the company’s recent acquisition of 18% of the Barnes & Noble Nook e-reader for $605 million in cash and future guarantees. This was a move to compete with Amazon, but can it really compete? If you want to know why Microsoft’s share price has been flat for 11 years while Apple, Amazon, and Google shares have soared, this is why. Microsoft is not innovating aggressively. It is not leading categories or blazing trails. No, it’s acquiring aggressively as a shortcut to innovation. That isn’t working. Its own history suggests as much.

F*CK FireFox

The last few updates to Firefox have destroyed what used to be the best browser in the world. Now Firefox is locking up on me with both my MacBook and my HP PC at work. The browser used to be fast and flawless. Now I have to keep forcing the browser to close. Today is the last day that I use Firefox at home. I just spent 30 minutes writing a beautifully written blog involving Newt Gingrich and marriage equality. Unfortunately, I didn’t save the blog as I wrote it and Firefox froze up. I had to restart the browser which lost everything except the title of the blog. So instead of the wonderfully poetic and inspiring blog, you are getting this one.

I guess I am going to give Chrome a try, but this is a sad day for Firefox.

Regretsy Community thwarted by PayPal for raising money for people instead of cats. WTF?

Some of you may know about a site that I like to visit called Regretsy. If you don’t know what this site is about, just head over there and take a look. It will be easier to see it for yourself than to try and explain it. Also, please share this post on your FaceBook page to get the word out. We need to pressure PayPal into letting this wonderful community of people continue on with their plans to buy gifts for kids who need them.

So, the owner of the Regretsy blog decided to do something good for her community. She decided to raise money for children in need. She made the mistake of using Paypal, which is now biting her in the ass.

After collecting money to buy the toys, Paypal froze her account and told her that only Non-Profit companies could use the “donate” button. She then had to refund all of those donations one by one. There were thousands of donations.

After talking with the representative and doing some research, the owner found a PDF file on Paypal’s website that states a person/company can use the donate button for a worthy cause. When she brought this up to the representative, she was told that raising money for a sick cat is a worthy cause but not poor people.

The rest of this story is just too freaking hard to believe, and the Regretsy owner is a much better writer than I am. If you want to continue reading about the entire fiasco, click here and here. This link will take you to the original story of how this all started off so innocently. Continue reading

Cholestrol new target in HIV battle? | Queer Landia

From Jim Reeves @ Queer Landia (re-posted with permission)

Researchers in Europe and the United States have found a method to prevent HIV from damaging a person’s immune system. The discovery may lead to an effective vaccine to prevent AIDS.

From Rueters:

Researchers working in laboratories on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) found it is unable to damage the immune system if cholesterol is removed from the virus’s membrane.

“It’s like an army that has lost its weapons but still has flags, so another army can recognize it and attack it,” said Adriano Boasso of Imperial College London, who led the study.

The team now plans to investigate how to use this way of inactivating the virus and possibly develop it into a vaccine.

iPhone 4: Zander Does Apple

I gave up on waiting for Sprint to get a decent phone. I gave up on waiting for HP to release a decent phone on Sprint (or even announce a new phone on Sprint). I have gone to the dark side and switched to an AT&T iPhone 4.

My initial experience with AT&T was mediocre. They are not as bad as they used to be, but they are not great. They set my account up wrong, so I have to call them to fix that.

Overall, I like the iPhone 4. I think that iOS is a close competitor to webOS. I still like webOS better, but without decent hardware, the OS struggles. Once HP starts putting out quality hardware (or licenses out the OS) I will probably move back. For now, though, I will enjoy this wonderful phone.

Apple to Buy HP?

Did you happen to notice that the iPhone 5 was pushed back until this fall? I noticed and I did some digging. What I found was beyond shocking, but first, here is some of the back story.

When Palm was sinking, Apple was one of the companies trying to buy the company out in order to get webOS. HP was either more determined or they had more money. Either way, HP won out, but that appears to have only been a small battle in a bigger war.

According to my sources, Apple is in talks to buy HP. Not webOS, the whole freaking company. That is how badly Apple wants webOS. Because of this, Apple is working to make iOS apps run natively on webOS, which is no small task.

Now for the bigger news. The iPhone 5 is being delayed in order to finalize the transition. The new iPhone will run webOS, not iOS. The new integration will officially be called iOS 5, but essentially it will be webOS 3.

Apple will also be announcing the new iPad 3 this fall, which will have the missing specs that people expected on the iPad 2. Apple scaled back on the iPad 2 in order to leave room for the introduction of the new iPad, which will also be running webOS (iOS 5).

After all this shocking news, along with AT&T buying TMobile, I wonder if the new devices are finally going to land on Sprint.

(note: this was just an April Fool’s Joke, but wouldn’t this be grand?)

HP planning WebOS event for February 9 | The Digital Home – CNET News

My heart just stopped. Salvation is only weeks away. I love my Pre, but the phone is starting to fall apart. I need a new phone and possibly a tablet. HPalm, don’t disappoint me.

Don’t expect all the big announcements to end at the Consumer Electronics Show this week.

Hewlett-Packard will be hosting a special WebOS event on February 9 in San Francisco. The company didn’t say what it will announce at the event, but the invitation’s tagline says, “Think big. Think small. Think beyond.”

Seriously, HPalm?

Dear HPalm,

If you are going to force me to leave the comfort and low cost of Sprint, why do you think I will stay with WebOS? Apple has better hardware and more apps. They are also getting ready to announce a phone on Verizon.

I have owned the Palm Pre since the first week that it came out. When the Pre Plus was announced for Verizon, I thought maybe we would see it migrate over to Sprint. Instead, you moved over to AT&T. I forgave you though, because what I really wanted was better hardware.

Palm created the best mobile OS with webOS. With the announcement of webOS 2.0, they are even further ahead of the others. However, Palm (and now HPalm) are way behind several of the competitors when it comes to the hardware. Do you really think a 3.1″ screen is even remotely viable with the 4 and 5 inch screens on the market?

In summary, HPalm, I am very saddened by your announcement today. I don’t want to leave Sprint. I have been a faithful follower of webOS since day 6, but now you slap me in the face for the second time. What is a person to do with that?

Sincerely,

Original Pre Owner
